The main focus of my career is sculpture with printmaking as an important catalyst in the development of my work. Following art school, I worked as assistant to the sculptor Lynn Chadwick and through his fine ink prints made with glass on paper I began to understand the vitality that the mark making-process can have on the making of sculpture. I am particularly interested in the tactile qualities of the medium and made a series of small stone pieces as a resource for Tate Modern, that could be handled and touched. My recent sculpture is mainly in the form of relief where printmaking and in particular papercasts, linocuts and woodcuts share some of the tactile characteristics that have become a key part in the development of my ideas. The three linocuts in the ‘Photocall’ series (shown on this website) arose following an exciting and stimulating visit to meet master printer Dr. Stanley Jones, at the Curwen Studio, Cambridge. Stanley showed me some of the fascinating lino blocks made by Edward Bawden and encouraged me to make some large linocuts. I started on these immediately following a visit to see the amazing Alvin Ailey American Dance Company at Sadlers Wells Theatre. Each linocut is based on the drawings I made during the photo call rehearsal for the press. I returned to the Curwen Print Study Centre to work on some of the prints. One of these was selected for the RA Summer exhibition, curated by Eileen Cooper in 2003, and this print was subsequently purchased and hung in the Lloyds London Building. I am currently working on a monumental scale bronze relief sculpture to be sited by the Piazza in Covent Garden, London, to commemorate the 300 year history of Covent Garden Market. An aspect of the cross fertilization of this project with printmaking, will be a series of woodcuts, based on my ideas for the design and imagery for this commission. | |
